Indoor Sydiving

Three years ago I got Eric an indoor skydiving gift certificate that he never ended up using before we left.  Since he had to go while we were there, we thought it would be fun for all of us to go.

This picture says it all!
Mallory, Eric, Grandpa, Darryl
Jared, Amanda, MiMi, Chance, Haleigh
Bryce (isn't he so cute in his gear?)

We each got 2, one and a half minute flights in the wind tunnel.  The first time you go you are trying to figure it all out, so the second time is much more fun.  I always thought there would be this big drop feeling, but apparently there is not.  Our instructor said the only difference between this and real skydiving is the view. I'll take his word on that!

During our introduction video, when they asked if we had any questions, Bryce raised his hand and said he wasn't doing it.  After watching for about 20 minutes, he decided to do it, but only because he was told he couldn't have his candy unless he did.  Yep, candy is what convinced him!  He got in there and wasn't even scared!  Maybe next year we can convince Mallory to go.

Here I am flying:

Here is Eric.  He was so tall he would just bounce from one wall to the other.
We didn't actually get pictures because we were all in there and no camera's were allowed.  However, a video came with it, but it's 27 minutes long, so I cannot post it.  If I find a way to post a shorter one I will, because it's really funny to watch all of us!  We had a blast! If you ever visit the Denver area, I highly recommend it.

Dave and Busters

We stayed really busy while we were visiting.  My brother Darryl and his daughter Haleigh came to visit and we all went up to Dave and Busters for some family fun.  Eric was so proud of himself for hitting the jackpot of 700 tickets on one of the first games he played.

This game was deal or no deal.  We were letting Mallory pick the cases, but unfortunately she has my luck and opened almost every single high amount case first.

Great place for all ages!

2010 Gingerbread House

After last year (2009 Gingerbread House), I was hesitant to make another Gingerbread house.  However, I think this year it went much better.

Bryce getting caught eating the candy.
Mallory so excited for all the candy.
Mallory decorating her snowman.

The end product.

Chance, Mallory, and Bryce decorating away.
Mallory wouldn't stop putting the icing on her finger and licking it off.
Bryce, Chance, and Mallory posing with their final product.
Bryce's bite of frosting after the picture was taken.
Enjoying the goods.

It's good to know that this is an enjoyable activity for 2, 5, and 10 year olds.  I guess it will be a long standing tradition for many years to come!

Chick-Fil-A

The second night we were in Colorado we went to meet my Mom, Bernie, and his daughter, Kylee, and her family for dinner.  Mallory and Emma had a blast playing in the play place.  Mallory likes to "wait her turn" because she doesn't like playing with the big kids, so we waited about an hour and they finally left.  I also learned a valuable lesson this night - never go anywhere without an extra pair of panties.  Mallory did not want to put her new pants without panties on after her accident that found itself on the floor of Chick-fil-A.  She kept telling me that's not how it goes.  What else do you do?

Our Visit with the Fuller's

The first night we arrived we stayed with our friends Amanda and Miles.  They have two girls just about the same age as Mallory and Jared, so it worked out nice.  We really enjoyed hanging out and catching up with them.

Here is Amanda's homemade apple pie!

Mallory sitting in Samantha's chair playing with the laptop.

Sam hanging out.

An attempted family photo.

Sam and Mallory playing in the sandbox (the weather was AMAZING!)

Jared hanging out.
Somehow I managed to miss getting pictures of Amanda, Miles, and baby Quinn.  I will have to get them from her camera and update the post later.

Off to Colorado!

The Friday night before we left for Colorado was my work Christmas party, which didn't leave us much time to pack.  We only packed for 5 days knowing we could do laundry and buy toiletries once we got there.
Here is what we left with (and we came back with one more!)

Here is our cute little traveler! (the backpack about knocked her over)
Jared ended up sleeping for 2 hours of the 3 hour flight and Mallory only had one breakdown (because she didn't want to put her seat belt back on). All and all it was not as bad as I was anticipating it to be.

2010 Christmas Card

Thanks to the awesomeness of SendOutCards, I managed to get my Christmas cards in the mail in less than 10 minutes AND in the first week of December.  It's not that much more expensive, and to not have to address them, stuff them, and lick them myself, I think it's totally worth it!  In case I missed you on my list this year, here are a few snapshots of the card:

Since you can't really read the quiz from these pictures, here it is:

10. What animal did Mallory ride this year?

Answers:

1. A. Hey, this is the same as last year. You are thinking wow, they didn't move. Wrong. Yes, we have officially moved again. Our landlord decided to sell in the middle of our lease, so we moved a mile down the street.

2. A. Mallory started Jazz this year, and although she is the youngest in her class, she is able to do most of the moves they do. She gets so excited about dance day that even if she didn't do anything I think I'd keep her in it.

3. C. We have officially met 3 of our neighbors in the process and one of Dan and Lisa's neighbors. He's so sneaking you don't even hear him over the crinkling grocery bags and kids crying.

4. D. Yep, there were lots of dead jelly fish that were washed up on shore and she wouldn't stop playing with it!

5. C. I thought it would be a good idea to get Mallory a male Betta one weekend. I asked her what his name should be and she said Princess. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Princess after only 10 short days. RIP

6. Trick question, the answer is all of them. Jared is not too fond of the fish lips, but he is so stinkin' cute with them.

7. A or B - you choose. After 724 nights, she finally slept through the night. Since then she has been waking up about half of the nights. Potty training was going well, no accidents for months, but we seem to be having some regression. Both are big steps for her though!

8. B. Jared will smile doing all of the above, but he will all out giggle when you smell his feet and say "PU Stinky Feet." Whatever works, right?

9. D. After seeing Disney Princesses on Ice, Mallory had to be Cinderella. Jared's chubby face looked so cute as a dragon!

10. D. The Circus we took Mallory to had elephant rides. I thought she'd be scared, but she did great and that is all she could talk about for weeks.

Thankful

Over the past week I have had a wide range of emotions, but something that I noticed over and over was that despite everything going on, I was so thankful.  Thankful that the situation wasn't worse than it was.  I'm not going to say it was a walk in the park, but I couldn't help but be so thankful that they did not need to be hospitalized, thankful that I was able to stay home with them and take care of them (even if I did have to work), thankful that I had health care, thankful that I didn't have to wash bottles for a week, thankful that I had friends and family calling to see how we were doing, thankful for having more patience than I ever have, thankful that I finished my final before they got sick, and thankful that I did not get it the same time they did.  Most importantly, I am thankful the fevers have stopped and that we are on a path to recovery for both kids.  I think all to often health is something we take for granted and this week just put a lot of things into perspective, in particular that even a sickness that wipes you out for a week, is nothing in comparison to other families who have long term health problems.   Here's to hoping Eric and I stay healthy and we all enjoy our trip to Colorado for the weekend!

The Finals Curse

Let me start with why I am not surprised my week was disastrous.  Of the past 5 finals weeks for Eric, something has happened except for once.  I am not sure why this happens, maybe it's a big life test for us, I don't know, but let me re-cap what has happened during Eric's finals:
Dec 08: Up every night until at least 3am trying to evict our no longer paying tenants
May 09: Eric had a broken foot
Dec 09: I was pregnant and in the hospital with some type of stomach bug
May10:  The one good one
July 10: Up all night with contractions thinking Jared was coming

Despite those, this year just topped all of them.  Not only did Eric have 6 finals (yes that is crazy), but the first Tuesday into finals, Mallory came down with an awful fever.  She was up ALL night. I can only do so much because I have Jared.  Inevitably, she wines and cries because she isn't feeling well, waking Jared up, leaving me up with two kids for a couple of hours a night.

It's not often that I have ridiculously crazy weeks at work that would require overtime, but as you can guess, that happened to be this week (and that maybe happens 3 times a year).  So Wednesday I took Jared to school,Mallory into work with me to get my computer, and head home to care for her while I work. Mallory was so disappointed that she did not feel well enough to go to dance or to the "cookies with Santa" event at her school.

Wednesday I got Jared from school, went through our normal routine, and he woke up in the middle of the night with a fever.  Now we had two kids with fevers.  I headed downstairs to put Jared into the sling (since that is the only way he'd sleep) and proceeded to work for 2 hours since I figured I might as well be productive if I was going to be awake.  Just as he woke up, Eric was headed out to study for his next final.

I thought Wednesday was bad trying to work from home with one sick child, but nope, Thursday topped that.  Working from home with two sick children equals an awesome fun time.  By about 7 oclock I was spent and we headed off to bed.  Again, both kids were up all night, and just as they finally both fall asleep at 7 in the morning, I had to get up and get work done for a meeting at 8, yes!  Eric ran off to the store to try and find some corn free tylenol for Jared (because who is even thinking that every standard fever reducer has corn syrup in it?) and brought it back before he went off to study for his next final.  By noon I had just about had it working from home with two kids again, so I signed off for the week, accepting that fact that everything that had to be done got done and that everything else could wait until next week.  Oh, and did I mention it was my turn to bring breakfast in for the breakfast club? Of course.

Mallory had been fever free all day Friday so I thought we might actually have a good night Friday.  Wrong!  Of course since Eric had a final on Saturday, she was up all night just crying, saying her nose was stuck and that she didn't feel well, with a fever, along with Jared coughing so much he'd gag himself and puke.  I must have changed 6 times that night. So between Eric and I, I'm pretty sure we got 3 hours of sleep combined.  You can imagine how that final went for Eric (at this point we are just hoping for no fails so we don't have to repeat another semester of this). Can you imagine what kind of grades he'd be getting if this stuffy didn't happen?

Since Mallory's fever came back, I took both her and Jared back to the doctor to make sure ear infections hadn't settled in.  When we were there Mallory had to stand on the scale.  The little boy behind her wouldn't do it, so after we got back to our room she looked at me and said, "that little boy is not going to get a sticker."  Smart girl :) After chest xrays and nose swabs, the tests came back positive for influenza.  The doc said we could expect 3-5 days of fevers and a couple weeks of coughing and running nose.  I have to say the coughing is the worst for the sleep.  No matter how much cough syrup you give them, it doesn't help.

Here we stand on Sunday and although Mallory had a fever at midnight, we have been fever free for Mallory and fever free for Jared for a day and a half.  Fingers crossed that we are on the downhill end of this sickness, because I think if I have to go one more day with no sleep, being puked, peed, pooped, sneezed, or coughed on, I might lose my mind.  Speaking of losing my mind, can you believe going at this for 5 days, solo during the days, I only had one semi-breakdown?

Although Eric had a fever during his final on Saturday, and I have had body aches (no fever), headaches, and a mild cough, I'm hoping I don't have to follow up this post with a flu post for us.

During times like this is when you really wish you had family who lived right next door who could just come over and let you sleep for even 30 minutes!  Today, Eric's aunt and uncle stopped by to bring us a big container of homeade soup, lots of fruits and veggies, and a big stuffed puppy for Mallory.   It was very thoughtful and appreciated!

Here is poor Mallory sleeping at the counter (note the flowers from Eric).
Although she has been really whiny (but fever free) I managed to get her on the dog for a picture.

As I write this, we are currently getting a snowstorm.  All I have to say is if their daycare closes tomorrow, I refuse to work from home with two kids again, so I will for sure be calling in sick!

With that said, who wants to volunteer to be here at the end of April for Eric's last round of finals?  If I plan to have help ahead of time then nothing can go wrong, right?

We leave for Colorado on Saturday for the holidays.  I really hope and pray we don't get sick before or during our trip! Here's to hoping for a better week with healthy happy children!

5 months and 33 months!

They really do get more entertaining with age.  Jared has been so easily distracted that it takes a long time to feed him because he has to turn around to look at every sound (Especially Mallory).  Yesterday, I was in the middle of feeding him and the doorbell rang.  I picked him up, went over to the door and it was a Jehovah's Witness handing out a flier.  As the man is holding it out telling me about it, Jared spit up all over it.  Hmmm, do you think that was a sign?  Not to worry, he had another I could have.

Jared's new favorite thing is naked time.  He will scream the whole time I'm in the shower if I just lay him down, but if i lay him down naked he is so happy.  I think it's because he can eat his toes easier (his latest thing).  He has also become very sensitive.  If Mallory starts crying, he gets so upset and starts crying too.  He has the cutest little pouty lip.

As for Mallory, she is a little sponge and I think it's probably time to start editing some of the music on the iPod playlist.  As we walked in the kitchen the other day, Mallory proceeded to sing, "have it your way, foreplay, before I feed your appetite."  Timberland, I think you must be removed from our repertoire of music.  Hopefully she hasn't sung this anywhere else yet (like at school).

Mallory has also become the food hog. She does not like sharing (which she gets from Eric).  If it's something she does not want to share, she immediately shoves all of it in her mouth so no one else can eat it.  I'm afraid she is going to choke.  We don't starve her I swear!

Last week at dance, something must have clicked for Mallory.  It's as if she watches and and observes things and just all out does it when she feels comfortable.  She hasn't done much for weeks, and all of sudden she was doing everything.  Go Mallory! I wonder if reading will be the same thing.  Just watching it over and over, taking it all in and then just picking up a book and reading one day...I can dream, right? She does know just over half of her letters as she points them out everywhere.  She also understands math on her hands (one finger plus one finger equals two, etc.).  Her latest obsession is coins.  She loves sorting pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.  I love seeing her grow up and loving every minute of learning. We have read more books than we have ever read before.  She used to get bored but now it's at least an hour of reading each night before bed.

Speaking of reading, I was reading Mallory her new favorite book, "Marvin K Mooney Will you Please Go Now!" and I was perplexed that it didn't end with question mark.  Is there some strange grammar rule I don't know about?

Last, let me tell you how much I love that every time I go to the bathroom Mallory praises me.  There is nothing like hearing, "Great job pottying Mom! I'm so proud of you."  or "Just a pee-pee?"  Who knew at age 26 someone would be proud that I was using the potty?

Here are the stats:

Jared
Weight: roughly 19lbs
Length: too busy to get

Mallory
Weight: 38 lbs
Height: too busy to get

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

Well it finally snowed on a weekend so as I promised, I took Mallory out to play in the snow.  She would have stayed out there all day if I would have let her.  Here they are all ready to go:

Mallory making a snowball:

Attempting to throw it but it just sticking to her gloves:

And eating the leftover:

After a while we watched from inside since it was too cold for Jared.

Here's a little video of Mallory making a snowball:

Let the Chaos Begin!

Most people look forward to December as it brings the holiday season and snow, where families gather and snuggle up together by the warm fire.  I have a different opinion.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the week of Christmas and being together with family, but up to that point there isn't a whole lot I look forward to in December.  On top of the Christmas music that takes over every store and radio station (sorry, I can only take Christmas music so long - it's the same songs ever year people!), and feeling guilty if I buy any present because we are on one income, for the past 3 years, December has been finals time for Eric.  So this means we pretty much don't see him for 2 and a half weeks, the house looks like a bomb went off, and if it lasted any longer I think I would claim insanity.  Then, the week before Christmas, it's all over and for two weeks we can actually feel like a normal family, Mallory stops acting out from the change (purposely pooping/peeing her pants, refusing to take naps, wonderful tantrums, and taking bottles of anything she finds in the bathroom while I'm holding Jared and putting it all over her, the floor, or the cabinets).

Despite all the chaos, I managed to get Christmas cards out and my final exam essays written and test taken all while juggling the kids - I don't recommend it (the test part that is - the Christmas cards are fast thanks to Send Out Cards!).  Maybe once I get my promotion in a few weeks I'll try to find a personal helper for a couple hours a week (that is if the raise to accompany it will cover the cost!).

All I have to say, is when you work full time and are forced to get everything done on the weekends, regardless of the mood or schedule the kids are on, you have to get creative when you do things.  For example, here is how I get the laundry downstairs and from the dryer to the couch (my arms are getting so strong!):

And here is Mallory actually holding her eyelids open because she was so tired yet refusing to take a nap:
12 more days!!! Happy, calming, peaceful thoughts.  Happy, calming, peaceful thoughts.  Happy, calming, peaceful thoughts.....

Jared's Rollin'!

I have officially witnessed both a front to back and back to front roll.  I can't get it on video yet, but hopefully I can get it this weekend.  You are probably thinking so what every kid does, BUT that is not true.  Mallory would never let you lay her down, so I never witnessed her rolling over.

On a somewhat related note (only because this is when he does his rolling), I always lay Jared on the floor naked while I take a shower because for whatever reason he doesn't cry as he would if he's not naked.  Anyway, tonight while I was in the shower he started crying all of the sudden.  I looked out and he had grabbed a hold of his parts and he hasn't quite learned to let go yet.  Poor kid.  This was one of those moments in parenting where there is a clear difference between parenting a boy and girl - the thought never crossed my mind!
Last random thought of the night, do all kids finger nails grow at the speed of mold (assuming you think mold grows fast)?  Seriously, I'm starting to think the school might think I don't groom my children because I cannot keep up on them.  They have daggers after a few days.  What ever happened to those commercials where it would be like "short brittle nails will grow." They made it seem like it was the norm to have slow growing finger nails.  I feel bad if I don't keep up though because the way Jared  grabs I'm putting any other baby within his reach at risk.  I feel like in adult terms I'm sending him to school with a knife.  OK, so that's probably a little over the top, but who knew not keeping up on hygiene could have dangerous consequences?

How We Meet our Neighbors

I thought for sure I had posted about this before, but I couldn't find it, so I thought I'd post again just in case I didn't.  Roscoe has become quite the sneaky dog. Twice now, as I'm carrying in groceries, he sneaks out of the garage and it's not until I don't hear his nails clicking on the floor or that I drop some food and he isn't there to get it that I realize he's gone.  It's always at that moment, as I've gotten our shoes on and all of us bundled up that I get a call from a neighbor saying they have our dog.  So, I have officially met three of our neighbors this way, all extremely nice.  We also met some of Lisa and Dan's neighbors this way.

I got to thinking though, what better way to meet your neighbors.  When you are new to an area, unless you see them outside and happen to be walking by, you never meet them.  Maybe every weekend I'll "accidentally" start letting him out to see who else we can meet.
