Holiday Goody Plates

For the last 3 years, finals has always been right before the holiday season. This was an extremely stressful time for us, so I gave up my holiday baking during this time.  It was so nice to get back into this year and the kids had a lot of fun helping (and eating).

Puppy chow.
Rice Krispy Treats

Pumpkin Bread/Muffins

Mallory thought I was crazy for letting her shake the puppy chow in the bag.

Our favorite chocolate/peanut butter cookies.

Chocolate covered strawberries.
Fudge.
The finished goods.

We made a tray for the teachers at their school. Mallory was so excited to bring it to them.

Originally I was going to put the goods for their teachers in the bags, but after I realized I had way more than I needed, I made them the tray and made Eric take the rest to people at work.  I had no idea the drama this would create.  Just for the record, he was not trying to suck up to anyone, and I he did not want to bring them in (and I would surely hope that nobody actually believes their yearly reviews are based on gift giving).  Not sure what to do about next year....

I Survived my First Law Firm Christmas Party....

For those who don't know, I find social events extremely ackward when I don't know the people.  I had been dreading this day for a while, mainly because I am not good at small talk at all, and often when I'm trying to small talk, I end up saying something that doesn't make any sense.

Needless to say, I survived, met some really nice people, and because I wasn't drinking, got to take note of those who could not handle themselves (there were only a few). It always amazing me that people are willing to get trashed in front of their employers, but I guess after seeing what people put on facebook (which their employers can see), I shouldn't be all that surprised.

First up is the dress, which I'm pretty sure Mallory was more excited about than I was.  I got it online at Cache since there aren't alot of places to buy dresses around here.  I ordered one from Nordstrom and two from Cache.  All of them fit right out of the box (which is amazing because that NEVER happens), but this is the one I chose based on the fabric, and sent the others back.
I didn't actually have open toed shoes, but I figured if I was going to get my fingernails done, I might as well get a pedicure too....

Nails.

An attempt at a picture before we left.

Earrings. Not what I had in mind but we searched all of Charleston for the same stones that matched the dress and didn't have any luck.

Hair.

We were at the party and I was convinced it was midnight and it was only 9 oclock.  I think all dinner parties should start at 3pm....

Additionally, as soon as Jared goes to sleep he wakes up between an hour and a half and two hours screaming if I'm not there.  We had Eric's mom call us when he went down so we would knew what time we needed to leave to get home before this dreaded scene.  We ended up leaving about 11.

We came home to this passed out kiddo.

They take professional photos when you are there which kind of reminded me of prom. I probably should have scanned it in for better quality, but for time sake, I just took a picture of the picture.  This is definitely the better of the two we got back.
It was nice to get out just the two of us.  Just for the record, either people were too drunk to remember or they just dont do it right here in WV, but the electric slide is not done the way it was done that night!

17 months and 45 months!

Whoever came up with terrible twos apparently never to made it to age 3.  I know personality probably plays a big factor, but wow is Mallory pushing every limit possible.  It's the let me do everything that you ask me not to do phase, let me ignore everything you say phase, and let me make up every reason why I did one of the above. Then, when you are the parent that is taking care of it, it somehow makes the other parent step in to try and help, which results in everyone arguing/crying and Jared covering his ears because he has no idea what the heck is going on.  Then we try and end with lots of cuddles until it happens again 5 minutes later.  Thankfully it goes is swings and is not every day, but the weeks where it is like that every day are very trying.  I sure hope this stage passes.  I read it was like the pre-adolescence phase.  Ugh, I cannot even imagine what she will be like during her teen years.  Please pray for me now!

As for Jared, he is going through a "I want Mommy all the time" phase.  He is so clingy and if he knows I am around he has to be with me or I have to be within a 5 foot radius.  He gets very territorial too.  He has started hitting and pushing, especially when Mallory is around (which about 90% of the time she eggs on, i.e. look Jared, I'm standing by Mommy, Look Jared I have this really cool toy you'll want...).  We are working on other ways to express feelings (but what other ways do you really have when you can't talk??).

Mallory has also learned "Knock, Knock" jokes.  You know, the ones where they just make something up that makes no sense and you pretend they are funny...I think every kid goes through this stage.  I just go with it, after all, it's helping her creative side, right? At least that is my justification.

Mallory also has something to say about everything.  I was trying to do something and started walking up the stairs while nursing Jared.  I tripped and when I fell I hurt my knee. Mallory sits there for a minute and says, "Mom, don't you think it would be a better idea to stop nursing Jared, walk up the stairs, and then nurse him again so you don't fall with him?"  Why yes Mallory, that would have been a great idea.  That's just what I needed to hear after hurting myself. I don't need the obvious pointed out thank you very much (had Eric said that he probably would have received a much different response:))

Also, maybe someone could shed light on this one.  Mallory has been saying, "Oh my GOD."  I am guessing she picked up on this at school because it's not something we ever say.  Anyway, in trying to explain to her that we don't say that, I could not get through to her that we can say God in some contexts and not others.  She just kept saying, "but Mom, we talk about God at school."  We sing, "Oh my God, oh my Jesus".  Ok, I give up on explaining that one.  Suggestions?

I also took Jared in for his 15 month appointment (only two months late).  He is growing well.  He's in the 75th percentile and his head is back on the charts at the 95th percentile.  He has always had this raised skin on his back from birth, so we are going into the dermatologist in a couple months to have that checked out. Hopefully it's nothing.

Here are a few pictures from the month:

I had to wash this stuffed dog since it was at school with Mallory.  Jared has never used this dog before, but had an emotional breakdown for the whole night because it was in the washer and he could see it spinning around.  The first thing he did when he got up in the morning was going to get the dog out of the clean laundry pile.  He was so excited it was OK.

Who needs toys when you have a box?
I was cleaning the kitchen and thinking I was almost done and I turned around and the kids had made more mess.  You can never catch up....and since when did they know there were straws in this drawer?

Jared thinks it's so fun to lick your fingers after you are eating. He does it even when he's not eating now.

Mallory loves staying in the lines.  As she puts it, "I worked really hard to stay in the lines." Great job Mallory!

I love that kids can fall asleep sitting up.  That is one thing I have never mastered.

I asked Jared to get me a tissue.  He came out pulling the roll of toilet paper behind him. All I got was Eric's mom taking it back.

Jared at the pediatricians office.  He loved playing with all the toys.

This is the only picture I could get which is terrible because he was moving, but Jared is crazy about balls.  Unfortunately, the advent calender we had came with chocolate balls which he insisted on carrying around.  This often resulted in Roscoe eating them (foil and all), it melting in his hands, or him biting into the foil.  I finally had to hide them to avoid the battle.  He would fall asleep with them in his hands and would wake up the moment we tried to take it out.

I can't believe how fast they grow!

Dusty: Our Elf on the Shelf

Apparently I'm a little behind the curve on learning about the elf on the shelf.  Anyway, for those who don't know, the Elf on the shelf is supposed to watch over your kids and report back to Santa at the North Pole each day on whether they were naughty or nice.  Upon return, the Elf finds a new place to watch from in the house. The one rule with the Elf is that he cannot be touched or he loses his magic.
Ideally, the kids will behave knowing the elf is watching and that their presents for Christmas are at risk and also have fun in waking up every morning.  Not only did the elf not prove to increase behavior, the few times I tried to threaten, Mallory just told me that either 1) she would be better the next day so he'd report back to Santa that day that she was good, or 2) that she would just write her own list and report back to Santa (this list was always with her on the nice list and Jared on the naughty list).
Additionally, the Grinch that lives in our house, I mean, Eric, disagrees with the idea of Santa and lying to your kids.  I'm not a trained psychologist but I think this may stem back to his feeling of deception when he found out Santa wasn't real when he was younger...who knows.  Every time I'd try and say, "Be nice, the Elf is watching," Eric immediately responded with, "You shouldn't make good choices because the elf is watching, you should just make good choices."  While that is true, and I don't agree with lying to your children, I think the idea of Santa adds to the magical feeling of Christmas.
Anyway, back to our elf.  We named him Dusty, however, I think we only called him that the first day. His nickname is apparently "Elfie" and that is what he was called for the remainder of his time with us.
In short, behavior didn't get better, the searching for the elf was the highlight of each morning, and on a few occasions when Jared touched the elf, Mallory had meltdowns in fear that his magic was gone.
Just for the record, you wouldn't think hiding the elf everyday would be a big deal, but it's the last thing you think to do when your tired at the end of the day.  Then Eric wouldn't realize where I had already hid the elf and would hide him in the same place that he had been before.  There were a few times he fell over and we had to tell Mallory the elf was taking a nap and there were a few times he forgot to change places and I had to tell Mallory he must have been too tired to fly back to the north pole (these days were dramatic because she was convinced he didn't come back because Jared made him lose his magic).
There are many blogs and websites where people get really creative with what their "naughty" elves do (i.e. fill the bath with bubbles, get flour everywhere and make a snow angel). Some of the ideas are cute, but I could barely remember to hide him, let along make him do anything that would ultimately end up in a mess for me to clean up.  Maybe next year we can get a little more creative....
Day 1, Elfie arrived in the box.
On Day 2 he was gone....
No fear, he returned.

I forgot to mention, Jared was OBSESSED with the elf.  He always pointed to the elf and wanted to be looking at the elf all day.  He was really good at finding him too.  Most days he found them before Mallory.

ELFIE!!!!

Day 21:
We didn't get our elf until we were already in December, but next year we will plan to have him arrive after Thanksgiving. They still ask about Elfie every day.  I may need to get something else to hide everyday until next year.
